It’s Summertime! As you prepare your reading list for sitting on the beach or the front porch of your summer cabin or the chair in your living room overlooking your back yard lawn, make sure to include the following titles:
What is Marriage? by Sherif Girgis, Ryan Anderson and Robert George
How to Defend the Faith without Raising your Voice: Civil Responses to Hot Button Issues, by Austen Ivereigh.
Both can be purchased at the Walnut Grove bookstore (and also on Amazon). Knowing what you believe, being able to articulate it in secular terms, and also understanding the opposing viewpoints, are all addressed in these books. And while we don’t usually associate Summertime with school work, spending time studying these issues will assist you greatly in relaxing, and keeping cool-headed this summer amid all of the hot air emanating from friends, relatives, your local Supreme Court… Happy Reading!
We had a blast!! Last Saturday, May 18th, at the Peruvian Cooking Class held at Walnut Grove Cultural Center, Isabel Escudero was our extraordinary chef, who thanks to her Peruvian background and culinary experience and skills, taught us how to prepare a delicious meal: Papa a la Huancaina (a potato salad), Aji de Gallina (a chicken dish), Arroz Tapado (rice with ground meat) and Suspiro
de Limeña (a very light meringue dessert), literally translated: sigh of a Limeñan lady, who upon tasting the dessert gives out a “sigh.” We learned from Isabel, with much grace, about the history and traditions behind the Peruvian Cuisine which is rapidly growing in popularity. Isabel holds a MA in Education, speaks 4 languages and teaches both Spanish and English. Currently she is translating a book from Spanish to English. She lives in Arcadia with her husband, Enrique, enjoying their grandchildren as often as possible. Thank you, Isabel, and thank you to all who attended! Buen Provecho!
Stepping-UP wrapped up this year’s course with a talk on the “Power of Branding!”
On June 8, 2013 the Stepping UP program at Walnut Grove welcomed independent filmmaker and visual artist Caroline Manalo for a presentation on "The Power of Branding". Beginning with the history of the Nike,Microsoft, and Pepsi logos, these high school women studied the visual design and marketing strategy behind some of today's top corporate icons. Challenged to name a movie after being shown only one letter from the film title, the students learned how choosing the right font can lead to successful entertainment branding. The afternoon concluded with each student brainstorming ideas for a personal logo using initials and graphic elements to symbolize each one's personality and interests. For more information on 2013 -14’s Stepping-UP course curriculum and how to apply, contact Monica Mehan at 310-208-5797.
